Adlake Railroad Marker Lamp/light Model # 1283 Caboose Rear Tail Light

This Lamp has been converted from burning kerosene for illumination, to electricity providing the illumination of its three (3) amber 5 3/8 inch lenses, and one (1) larger red lens that is 6 3/8 inch. This model of marker lamp was used by several railroads, but they are commonly associated with the Union Pacific RR, and the Denver, Rio Grand RR.

The UP RR used green lenses in it marker lights, while the D & RG RR used amber lenses, although if a UP train ran on the D & RG tracks, they would change from green to amber for their marker lights, and vice versa. Since I have seen other 1283 markers that I know were electrified by the railroads, I believe this marker light was originally a UP marker light before the top vent was removed and a steel plate was soldered over the square hole. The bottom of this lamp has a enlarged center hole and two crescent oval holes cut on either side to accommodate the electrical fixture installed by the RR. It could have been this Light was installed with a partial shield inside to block light from some of the lenses by turning the light fixture. I know the RR used a different voltage on their trains.

When electrified the lenses were usually changed to plastic, however, this light still has two glass amber lenses, and one amber and red plastic lenses. It should be noted that the hasp that locks the top latch has been broken off at some point, however, when placed into position the latch still holds the top fine. Inside this lamp is a electrical socket that appears to be RR, that is mounted on a thick round piece of wood. I'm sure this was put in when the lamp was restored. There is a white porcelain electrical bracket in the side to accommodate the heavy electrical wire. I don't see any problems when using or lighting this marker light, but I recommend this for all electric item I sell. I believe that about covers it. This Marker Light is better looking in person and a great part of Railroad history. Please ask any questions you might have.
