BURLINGTON ROUTE RAILROAD LANTERN Signal Red Cast Lantern Globe

Offered is a unique piece of railroad history; a Burlington Route Railroad Lantern with a Red Cast Burlington Route Box Logo Lantern Globe. Burlington Route is short for Chicago Burlington & Quincy , the full corporate name of the road. The lantern frame is a tall globe Handlan-Buck and is embossed on the shoulder of the lid with the Burlington Route box logo. It is a large insert, drop in fount style, with double wire guards.

Has the earlier style button or leaf style lid latch. The lantern frame is in excellent condition; nice clean metal, stands straight and has no extra holes drilled, bent, broken or missing parts, and all joints are tight. There are some minor dome dents from years of use. It has the correct large insert drop in fount and embossed Handlan burner (takes a 5/8 wick). The wick easily moves up and down.

The fount bottom appears to have had some minor repairs done in the past, I dont see any holes when held up to light, but no guarantee it will hold fuel, not tested. It comes with a Signal Red Lantern Globe which is nicely cast with the Burlington Route box logo, a perfect match to the frame, as well as the CNX Corning Glass Logo and Made in USA. The lantern globe is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, scratches or cloudiness. As with any globe that saw railroad service, there may be some roughness or chipping on the rims which will not show when the globe is in a frame.

The roots of the Chicago Burlington & Quincy go back to 1847 with the creation of the Aurora Branch Railroad. The name was changed to the Chicago & Aurora in 1852. In 1856 the Chicago & Aurora was merged with the Military Track Railroad to form the CB&Q. The CB&Q existed from 1856 until 1970 when it merged with several other railroads to form Burlington Northern.

In 1997 the Burlington Northern merged with the Santa Fe to form what is todays Burlington Northern Santa Fe or BNSF which still operates many of the former CB&Q lines.
