The Penn Central Transportation Company , commonly called the Penn Central (PC), was an American railroad company that operated from 1968 until 1976. It was created by the merger in 1968 of two competing railroads, the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central Railroad, both of which were in considerable financial trouble. The New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad was added to the merger at the insistence of the Interstate Commerce Commission in 1969. The combined railroads did not correct service problems or turn around their financial situation, and in 1976 the US Government formed a government-subsidized company, Conrail, to take over the Penn Central. Five other regional railroads were added to the Penn Central companies in this action.
The lantern is in good condition, considering its age and use. The lantern shows some dents and wear consistent with its use, and there is some minor spot rusting which can easily be cleaned up. A nice collectible for any PC railfan.
