For sale is an Authentic Antique Railroad Boxcar Roof cast Iron Hand Railroad Brake Wheel measuring approximately 16 wide by 18½ long (including the 15½ long solid iron shaft). This great piece of Collectible Railway memorabilia comes with over 15 of its original square solid steel shaft and would be the perfect addition to any Railroad hardware collection and could also be put to functional use such as a turn wheel to open an old gate or door or crafted into an Artisan industrial metal sculpture.
The piece is in extremely sturdy, heavy duty condition with the expected wear for its age including some areas of oxidation and an incision near the top of the solid steel shaft that does not affect its strength or integrity. The hand brake, is a mechanical device (usually a wheel) used to set and release the brakes on a piece of rolling stock. Hand brakes are still used today to keep railroad cars stationary (especially for loading and unloading), but before the advent of locomotive-activated braking systems, it was the brakeman's job to walk across the top of a moving train and set the hand brakes individually.
