These lanterns were first invented in the 19th century to improve railway safety and were widely used on European railways until the mid-20th century. A copper body with ventilation holes, glass panels, and a mounting bracket. A gas generator mounted on the rear wall of the lantern.

The round bottom vessel is designed for carbide, while the upper rectangular tank holds water. By turning the handle, water drips onto the carbide, producing acetylene gas that burns to create a bright white flame.
