Antique Railway Signal Lantern G. KNODT, Oil Lamp, Germany, Early 20th Century

Here is a well-preserved antique railway signal lantern, manufactured in the early 20th century by the German company G. The lantern is made of copper, steel, and glass. It features an internal oil lamp as a light source. Three of its sides are made of thick (6 mm) beveled glass, finely polished at a 45-degree angle.

This faceted design gives the glass a prismatic shape, creating a stunning optical effect that enhances the brightness of the light. The glass panels are exceptionally clear, free of scratches or wear, which speaks to their remarkable durability. The back panel is equipped with a bracket for hanging and opens via a latch, providing access to the oil lamp. The burner is made of brass, complete with its original wick and a working wick adjuster.

Oil is poured through an opening in the burner's cap, which can be easily lifted with a hook or nail. These types of signal lanterns were invented in the 19th century to improve railway safety. During the early 20th century, similar oil lanterns with wooden handles were widely used on German and other European railways before being replaced by carbide gas lanterns, which produced a brighter flame. This lantern is a true collector's treasure!

It is perfect for antique enthusiasts, especially those who appreciate copper and brass artifacts in their original condition. Looking for a unique gift for a lover of early 20th-century antiques? This lantern is an ideal choice, reflecting the engineering ingenuity of the 19th century and the craftsmanship that turned technical designs into stunning copper masterpieces. Width: 11 cm / 4.3 in. Depth: 8 cm / 3.1 in.

Height: 19 cm / 7.5 in (without handle), 26 cm / 10.2 in (with handle). Weight: 0.87 kg / 2 lbs. Materials: Copper, brass, iron, wood, glass. The lantern is in excellent vintage condition, with all original parts intact. The copper components have developed a beautiful golden patina, while the steel elements are black or dark gray.

The body is free from dents. The door opens and locks securely. The oil lamp is firmly attached and can be easily removed using the copper loop. The burner is fully functional, with an intact wick and a working wick adjuster.

The glass panels are clean, free of scratches, scuffs, or clouding. One panel has a tiny chip at the corner.

KNODT - FRANKFURT A/M stamped metal plate is soldered onto the back panel. All items I sell are offered as is.

Each has its own history, and some show the passage of time more than others, adding unique vintage charm. Feel free to reach out with any questions.
