The bellbottom is also solid and has no holes or rusted out areas. It does have a surface which appears to be "wrinkled", for lack of a better term.
The patent dates are stamped on the underside of the bellbottom and the last of these is 1882. The globe is clear, no cloudy areas and strongly etched C&WM. The top and bottom rims are in good shape but -- the bad news, which can be seen in the pictures, is that the globe is cracked. All in all, a very hard to find lantern from a road that operated on the west side of Michigan and became a part of the Pere Marquette system. The item "C&WM RR 1882 A&W bellbottom railroad lantern withclear etched C&WM ext base globe" is in sale since Sunday, March 10, 2019.
