This is an Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railroad (Milwaukee Road) switch lantern. These were made in the railroad's shops themselves, and consequently, these are far more limited in availability than the lanterns made by the large companies like Adlake or Handlan, for example. It is in amazing condition for its age, considering it was made 1928 or earlier, as the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul, and Pacific did not come into play until 1928 after emerging from bankruptcy as caused by their huge expense of building their Pacific Extension, which cost them four times what was expected.
We have never seen a CMSTP lantern nicer or more complete. The red and blue lenses are intact with no cracks. The lantern opens easily at the top to reveal an intact burner, with the rare burner glass still intact and present. The burner is made by Adlake.
99% of the lanterns we see have broken or missing burner glass. The lantern is impressed into the metal with "CM&STP RY" on the top rim of the lantern. Top notch lanterns, not to mention other metal hardware from this railroad, are becoming very hard to locate.
This is a RARE and QUALITY lantern that you just do not find often. It stands about 14 inches tall, not including the handle. The item "Chicago, Milwaukee, & St. Paul Railroad Switch Lantern-EXCELLENT" is in sale since Saturday, October 31, 2020.
