Offered is a vintage piece of Colorado Railroad History , a DENVER & RIO GRANDE WESTERN Railroad Lantern with a Signal Blue or sometimes referred to as Cobalt Blue Fresnel Style Lantern Globe. The lantern frame is a Dressel , single wire guard, flat vertical style, and is embossed on the shoulder D&RGWRR. The frame is in excellent condition; clean smooth metal, retains most of its original tinning, stands straight and has no extra holes drilled, major dents, bent, broken or missing parts. It comes with a Dressel fuel fount and Badger burner (takes a 7/8 wick).
The fount and burner appear to be in excellent working condition; wick easily moves up and down, fount retains its original factory wadding and it should hold fuel and burn if desired but has not been tested. The Signal Blue Fresnel Style Lantern Globe is in excellent condition and free of scratches, cloudiness, or cracks. As with any globe that was used in actual railroad service, there are some minor nicks or chips on the veins and there may be some minor nicks on the rims, that do not show when the globe is seated in the lantern frame.
The Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad was formed in 1921 with the merger of the Denver & Rio Grande and Rio Grande Western Railroads. The D&RGW existed until 1988 when it merged with the Southern Pacific. Southern Pacific was absorbed by the Union Pacific in 1996 and many portions of the D&RGW are still operated today by the UP.
