Offered is a unique piece of railroad history; a Handlan-Buck tall globe railroad lantern. It is a round top The Handlan model and is embossed on the shoulder in large letters FRISCO , which is the nickname for St Louis & (-) San Francisco Railroad. The lantern frame is in excellent condition; stands straight and has no extra holes drilled, bent, broken or missing parts. It has the correct Handlan twist off fount cup and fount and a burner embossed Handlan St.
The fount and burner appear to be in operating condition, should hold fuel and burn if desired and the wick easily moves up and down. The bottom of the fount shows solder repair (see photos) but I see no visible holes when held up to light.
It comes with a Clear Melon Style Lantern Globe which is etched FRISCO , in the Coon Skin Logo. The lantern globe is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or scratches or cloudiness. As with any globe that saw railroad service, there may be some roughness or chipping on the rims which will not show when the globe is in a frame.
The St Louis & San Francisco existed from 1876 to 1916, when it became St Louis San Francisco , FRISCO , being the nickname, which existed until 1980. It was acquired by Burlington Northern in 1980.
Burlington Northern merged with Santa Fe in 1997, forming todays Burlington Northern Santa Fe. Be sure to view all photographs closely as they are part of the item description.
