The roots of the Great Northern go back to 1861 with the creation of the Minnesota & Pacific , in 1862 the name changed to Saint Paul & Pacific , then in 1879 to Saint Paul Minneapolis & Manitoba , finally becoming the Great Northern in 1890. The Great Northern existed from 1890 until 1970 when it merged with several other railroads to form Burlington Northern. In 1997 the Burlington Northern merged with the Santa Fe to form what is todays Burlington Northern - Santa Fe , which still operates many of the former GN lines.
