It's a signal lamp, i believe? At first i thought it was unmarked, but afer careful looking, it is marked LSWR. London and South Western Railway. Which, as far as i can tell, dates this lamp to pre 1923.

That's when the company was amalgamated with other lines into being Southern Railways. So used in the golden age of steam.

This could be a very early design; the railway was running since 1838. I'm fairly sure this is a Welch design, but i'm not 100% sure.

It's not quite like the others i've seen. It is marked with a "F" on the top. And i can read a part of a Patent stamp. I would assume it was made by Lamp Manufacturing and Railway Supplies, of London.

There is a painted-over plate; it probably has the name on it? And so, to condition of this amazing antique. This was definitely a working railway lamp. And i guess it was never cleaned up at the end of it's life?

The door is sealed with age and railway dirt. Interestingly, the wick can still be raised and lowered. I'm sure, with a little effort, the resevoir can be filled and the door opened.. Both lenses are in good, if dirty, condition; with no cracks.

Please see the photos and feel free to ask any questions. The handle is working fine, but there's no sign of a cap or lid for the chimney; again, an earlier design perhaps? It has a really great look and feel in the hand. I've been walking about, swinging it away, dreaming of olden, golden railway days... Being in original, untouched condition, this might suit someone keen to clean it up and restore it?

Or just a serious LSWR collector perhaps? I feel sure someone will be pleased to own this lovely lamp... I will pack it very carefully for travel.
