This will be a focal point to your train room. The Adlake "Non-Sweating Lamp" is a classic railroad signal lantern produced by The Adams & Westlake Company (Adlake)-a major maker of railroad lamps and safety equipment in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These lamps were essential on trains and in rail yards for signaling and marking positions, especially at night or in low visibility.

Heavy metal body: Typically made of painted sheet metal or cast iron, finished in black. Embossed cap: The top often has raised lettering reading "THE ADLAKE NON-SWEATING LAMP CHICAGO, " identifying both the brand and the special non-sweating design. Multiple signal lenses: Many versions have multiple colored bullseye lenses (commonly red and blue/green) arranged around the body to show different signal aspects. These lenses would produce distinct, bright lights when the internal flame burned.

Hinged panels or sliding door: A side access door or top hinge allowed the burner to be refilled and serviced without removing the lamp from its post or bracket. Handle/Bail: A robust top handle for carrying or hanging on brackets or hook mounts.

Kerosene burn chamber: Inside sat a kerosene reservoir and a wick burner sometimes stamped USE KEROSENE OIL ONLY/ The Adams & Westlake Co. The flame provided illumination for the signal lenses. Non-sweating technology: The defining feature was a design intended to prevent condensation ("sweating") inside the lantern, which could obscure the lenses, dim the light, or extinguish the flame in cold or damp conditions. This was a significant improvement in reliability for railroad use.

These lanterns were used as marker lamps on the rear of trains, as switch or signal lamps in yards, or as indicator lights on tracks. Their colored lenses communicated information like track alignment, the end of a train, or other signaling needs before modern electric systems. They ranged from smaller single-lens lamps up to larger 4-way signal lanterns with four colored lenses.

Some have been converted to electric lighting for decor today. In summary, the Adlake Non-Sweating Lamp is a rugged, kerosene-fueled railroad signal lantern with a signature non-condensing design, embossed branding, multiple colored signal lenses, and robust construction-once standard equipment for safe rail operations and now collected as historic railroadiana.
