Offered is a vintage piece of American Railroad History ; a UNION PACIFIC Railroad Lantern with a Red Etched UP Lantern Globe. The frame is an HANDLAN Short Globe and is embossed on the dome UP. The lantern frame is in excellent condition, nice smooth metal, no dents, stands straight and has no bent, broken, or missing parts. It comes with a correct Handlan fount with original factory wadding and burner which is embossed on the thumb wheel HANDLAN ST. LOUIS, (takes a 7/8 flat wick).
Fount & burner are fully functional; wick easily adjusts up and down and would hold fuel and burn if desired. There is a last patent date of 7-10-28 embossed on the bottom of the lantern. The Signal Red Etched Lantern Globe is in excellent condition and is free of chips, cracks, scratches, or cloudiness.
It is nicely etched UP and is cast ADLAKE KERO, MADE IN USA, and CNX , indicating it was made by Corning Glass. As with all lantern globes that were used in railroad service there may be some minor chipping on the top and bottom rims that will not show when the globe is seated in the lantern frame. The Union Pacific Railroad has existed since 1864 and is the last remaining transcontinental railroad still in existence in the United States using it original name.
