Sorry for any confusion my this may have caused. Was incorporated January 1, 1905, by a merger of several lines in Indiana and Illinois that formed a 471-mile railroad consisting of lines that served South Bend, Butler, & Terre Haute Ind. And went as far west as St.

On January 1, 1917, it was merged into the Pennsylvania Railroad system. This is a rare, excellent condition, early 1900s Handlan-Buck tall globe Vandalia Railroad lantern with an etched, extended base clear melon globe. The lantern has all the correct components for this model (globe retaining collar, font, burner, & melon globe). The lid is stamped The Handlan, and Handlan-Buck MFG Co. The lid shoulder is stamped with 1/2 V.

The clear extended base melon globe is etched with 1/2 VRR letters. The font is stamped with patent dates of 2/11/96, 3/2/09, 8/23/10, and 12/27/10. The burner is stamped Handlan St. On the end of the wick raising knob.

It has been gently hand cleaned (no wire wheels or solvent baths) and is display ready. As for the overall excellent condition, there are no dents or frame distortions, the globe has a couple of very minor flaws in the glass (typical of glass of this age/era) that do not detract from the etching, and the only minor issue is the thumb press for the lid is missing (see photo 4), but the lid still snaps closed securely. Any Vandalia Railroad marked lantern is scare, but the early VRR tall globes are rare. This would be a great addition to any VRR, Pennsy, Handlan, or railroadiana collection.
