This is a vintage Norfolk and Western Railway lantern made by the Armspear Mfg Co. It is embossed on the top Armspear M'F'G. NEW YORK "1925"" and "N&W RY on the rim. It has a red globe marked "Made in USA" and "CNX", which was the Corning mark back in the day.
The lantern measures 15" high with the bail wire up, 9-1/4" high without the bail wire, and about 7 wide at the widest point across the wire cage. The fuel tank is embossed "Use Long Time Burning Oil Only Ni400" and the wick holder "Adlake 400". The wick height adjustment lever works and locks down. The lantern is in remarkably clean shape for its age and use, given that it has never been cleaned. There are inclusions and bubbles in the globe, with a chip at the rim (see globe series of photos) that is hidden when the globe is in the lantern. There is a faint smell of fuel oil, small dents in the top and bottom, a bit of carbon buildup inside the chimney, and some surface rust. There is also some distortion in the bail wire.
